Carolina Compost was created in March 2009. Husband and wife team, Brian and Anna Smith, founded Carolina Compost. The facility is located at Anna’s horse boarding operation, Silver Star Farm, in Camden North Carolina. The idea for Carolina Compost was created through forward thinking triggered by a surmounting horse waste problem.
We realized the after the first year that Silver Star Farm was up and running that we had a large quantity of horse waste that could create an environmental problem. It started polluting our wetlands by leaching into our soils and water table; plus it was horrible to look at as well as the fly population started to rise. We knew we needed to do something with our waste and composting seemed like the best logical solution. We installed a 3-bin system that is now our production facility. It consists of a forced aeration compost system designed by O2Compost. The aerated bins in the system were designed specifically to hold the amount of waste produced by the 6 horses stabled at Silver Star Farm. After our manure and stall waste has been through the composting procedure we then take the material and send it through a Bush Hog, wood chipper shredder. This allows the finished material to be broken down in to a beautiful rich uniform product. Our finished product is tested and approved by the state of North Carolina as a Grade-A compost. The all-natural compost comes packaged in breathable 60lb bags and compost tea bags and can be sold in a retail environment.
